About Dr J F Dawson
M(Ost) DO
Empowering by teaching better health
Dr Dawson has loved racing bicycles and learning about health for as long as he can remember. Over the years, an initial study in physiology and chemistry at UCT and his pursuit of optimum performance in elite sport have developed into a passion for osteopathic practice.
Dr Dawson later trained in London, UK, at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine and was awarded a Master of Osteopathy degree. This was followed by a 10 month theory and practical course in traditional osteopathic methods at the British Institute of Osteopathy.
As a general practice osteopath who treats people of all ages with a wide range of conditions, from acute to chronic, Dr Dawson has a particular interest in empowering patients to set and achieve goals regarding their pain and performance.

What To Expect
Your first consultation
Dr Dawson will ask questions about your problem and symptoms, and may also ask about your medical history, any medications you are taking, as well as factors that may not appear to be directly related to your problem. Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to treatment, so your practitioner may look at other parts of your body, as well as the area that is troubling you. Hands-on treatment may include mobilisation, manipulation, massage, stretching, and repetitive movements.
What do I need to bring?
Bring along any X-rays, scans or test results that you may have. Depending on the area of your body requiring examination, Dr Dawson may ask you to undress to your underwear. It is essential that you feel comfortable, so you may want to bring a pair of stretchy gym shorts to change into. You may bring a chaperone if you wish. Plan to attend along with your child if your child is the patient.
Arriving On Time
Please aim to arrive a little early for your appointment, making room for Cape Town traffic. Even though you would have signed a general consent form when booking online, you will have the opportunity to consider and consent (or not) to specific treatment in the consultation.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can make an appointment directly with an osteopath, without a referral. Osteopaths are trained to diagnose and treat. We accept cash and card payments, and most medical aids will reimburse you for treatment from your savings component.
